Ramadan arrives about 11 days earlier than last year, when it began on 18 February 2026, because the Islamic months are lunar.

The moon-sighting night

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court, through the Saudi Press Agency, calls for sighting the Ramadan crescent on the evening of 29 Sha'ban, which in Umm al-Qura is Saturday 6 February 2027.

  • If the crescent is seen: Sunday 7 February is the first day of Ramadan.
  • If not: Sha'ban completes 30 days and Ramadan begins on Monday 8 February, as Umm al-Qura expects.

Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar; fasting and Eid follow the official sighting. The difference is explained in Umm al-Qura calendar explained.

Eid al-Fitr 2027

  • Tuesday 9 March 2027 per Umm al-Qura, if the Shawwal crescent is sighted on the evening of 29 Ramadan.
  • Wednesday 10 March 2027 if Ramadan completes 30 days. Some international sites list this date.

Track it on the Eid countdown, which also covers Eid al-Adha 2027.

Why 2030 has two Ramadans

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier every year. By 2030 it reaches early January: Ramadan 1451 starts on 5 January 2030 and Ramadan 1452 starts on 26 December 2030, so one Gregorian year contains parts of two Ramadans. This happens roughly every 33 years, the same cycle that makes your Hijri age a year higher.
